Separate publisher identity from development work

The developer account is part of your business continuity. We recommend that the merchant controls the account used for its branded application and grants the development team appropriate access. An agency can prepare code and release materials without owning the merchant’s identity.

Discuss the legal account holder early. Enrollment, identity verification and organizational details can take time independently of app development.

Account ownership is not source ownership

These are separate assets: the store account, application listing, signing configuration, source code, design and customer data. A contract should address each one explicitly. Paying a subscription does not automatically assign copyright or deliver a buildable repository.

Similarly, holding an account does not mean you can operate a backend without the service provider. Record the infrastructure and service dependencies needed to keep the app working.

Use delegated access

• Keep the primary account and recovery methods under business control.
• Give team members their own access rather than sharing passwords.
• Document who approves submissions and commercial agreements.
• Review access when a supplier or employee leaves.
• Store release documentation and the app’s identifiers in a handover record.

Plan the exit before launch

Ask whether the application can be transferred, what conditions apply and which services would need reconfiguration. Store transfer rules and entitlements can affect the process; a supplier should not promise an unconditional transfer for every application.

Agree how to export business data and what happens to customer access at the end of a subscription. Separate retained transaction records from optional marketing data.

Questions to settle in writing
